Founded in 1965 as a Men's Division III team, the Golden
Pennsylvania Rugby Football Club (GPRFC) now administers 11
different rugby teams in the city of Golden, PA. Beginning in
age with three Boys Under-9 teams and through a Men's Masters team,
the GPRFC also includes Men's and Women's Division III teams and a
boys' and a girls' high school teams.
In the spring of 1997, the
club officials of the men's team recognized the growth potential
developing for youth rugby throughout the U.S. As a group, the
board made a commitment to actively develop the game of rugby in its
market area. In the time since then the club has grown
to a membership of 300 men, women, boys, girls, parents, alumni and
supporters.
Such numbers require well-organized leaders and Golden insures
this by encouraging participation from all members in the matter of
chores within the club. Board meeting s occur quarterly while
frequent project meetings occur as needed. Not only does this
lessen the load on everyone but it engages young and old alike in
club management.
The real story in this organizational improvements and efforts for rugby in
Golden is the fact that, while keeping the dues at a rate of
one-third the Eastern Penn Rugby Union averages, they have
amassed a development fund of $32,000. Ask any club member and
they will tell you that this is due to great organization and effort
by the club leaders and members and the positive image they have
developed. This image building has paid off thanks to the
community support it has created.
Keeping track of schedules, players, matches, socials, fund
raisers, etc. , along with communicating the information to all
important and involved parties was a challenge that faces all club
organizations, but the Golden RFC concentrated on developing a
system of reporting and communication. This has shown benefits
as the Golden Blade, the daily newspaper, devotes a quarter of
a page on page 4 of the Sports section on Tuesdays during the
seasons for coverage of all matches the previous weekend, sometimes
numbering up to 10 matches.
The Club annually participates with the Golden chapter of the
American Cancer Society (ACS) to play an exhibition match with
turnpike rival Harrisburg during their Live! festival.
Attendance has topped 1,000 the for this match the last 3 years and
provides for outstanding public relations with their community by
raising $3,000 each year for the ACS.
